Alexander City, a small town in central Alabama, acknowledges it has some major obstacles on its’ hands. With the downsizing of the town’s leading industry, Russell Corporation, from 8,500 employees to 1,500 employees in conjunction with a failing national economy, and 62% of its school children living at or below the poverty level, Alex City watched its youth sports league dwindle to the brink of extinction. In addition to these factors and through communication challenges between the City, school system, and local agencies, what once was a proud staple of the community has now become just a mere shell of its former self.
Concerned citizens, in conjunction with City leaders realized that a quick and immediate resolve was needed. This group came together to form the Alex City Sports Foundation, a non-profit, incorporated organization with the goal to increase awareness of the need for youth involvement in all sports programs and to give youth other alternatives after school. The Sports Foundation is well organized with charter, mission statement, board of directors and officers to insure focus and balance are maintained.
Despite the negative factors and hardships the City has faced over the past 10 years, Alex City has proven to grow stronger. Despite massive job losses, instead of moving, families have continually made the decision to remain in Alex City because of the excellent public school system and safe community environment. Both the AP program along with the dual enrollment program at the local community college has seen an increase in enrollment. Although children have continued to excel academically, there is still concern for youth being unattended during the time after school until parents return home from work. With more and more parents having to travel outside of the community for employment, this has left a void that needs persistent attention.
We are all examples for our youth! We want to turn adversity into opportunity!
The Alexander City Sports Foundation appreciates any support to ensure the youth of this community has the same opportunities as always.
